  • Overview
  • FY-4 is the second generation of China's geostationary meteorological satellite series. FY-4B, the second of its series, was launched on June 3rd, 2021, aiming to serve as a operational satellite. FY-4B has adjusted payloads and tuend-up performance on the basis of FY-4A scientific experiment satellite, which has been launched on December 11th, 2016 and working in orbit for more than 4 years.
  • Spacecraft
  • FY-4B is based on the SAST5000 platform with three-axis stabilization and 1553B and Spacewire dual-buses system. It has a designed life of 7 years and launch weight of 5400kg, The main payloads onboard FY-4B are Advanced Geostationary Radiation Imager, Geostationary Interferometric Infrared Sounder, Geostationary High-speed Imager and Space Environment Package.

FY-4B is going to enhance China's geostationary meteorological observations abilities with improved observation intervals and spatial resolutions, and to meet the requirements of meteorological operations modernization.

Fog monitoring
Heavy fog over all of the Yellow sea region with a coverage of about 219,000 km2 was monitored by FY-4A at 06:30 (UTC) on May 17 2020.
Sand monitoring
The Mongolia cyclone which caused heavy sand storm in most regions of northern China was monitored by FY-4A from 12:00 on March 27 to 12:00 on March 28 (UTC) 2021.
Cloud monitoring
A Karman vortex street clous system to the south of Korea and southeast of Japan was monitored by FY-4A from 01:00 to 06:30 (UTC) on January 21 2019.
Typhoon Monitoring
Typhoon MESAK and HAISHEN were monitored simultaneously in northwest Pacific by FY-4A from 01:00 to 07:00 (UTC) on September 2 2020.
